Heintz Orthodontics recently set up a display at the Hayner Public Library. The month of October is National Orthodontic Health Month! We know Halloween is a fun time for people of all ages. But too much candy can contribute to tooth decay and unexpected trips to the Orthodontist. Eating to many chewy, sticky foods can harm your braces and end up lenghtening treatment time. Children who wear braces should avoid such snacks as caramel, nuts, hard candies, licorice, taffy, popcorn, jelly beans, tootsie rolls and bubblegum. Candies like chocolate or other melt-in-your-mouth varieties are acceptable in moderation. We hope you get a chance to stop by the mall and check out our display. It is very festive and also educational. Here is a sneak peek...:-) Have a safe and Happy Halloween!!!

Braces Friendly Recipes.....Yummy Fall Treats!

Pumpkin Cake

Ingredients
1 pkg. yellow or white cake mix
½ cup vegetable oil
4 eggs
1 cup canned pumpkin
¾ cup sugar
1 tsp. cinnamon
Dash of nutmeg
¼ cup water (add 2 tbl. of water if eggs are small)
Directions
Put cake mix in a large bowl. Make an indentation in the center and pour in the oil and one egg. Mix using mixer at medium speed, then add the rest of the eggs one at a time, beating after each one. Add pumpkin, sugar, spices, then water. Bake in greased and floured tube pan in 350 degree oven for 60-70 minutes. Cool before removing from pan. Makes a moist and delicious cake—no frosting required.

Apple (Not Too) Crisp

Twisty Soft Pretzels

Ingredients
¾ cup warm water
½ envelope yeast
1 teaspoon sugar
2 cups all-purpose flour
½ teaspoon salt
1 egg, beaten
Pinches of salt or cinnamon-sugar
Directions
Preheat oven to 425°. In a small bowl, stir together warm water, yeast and sugar. In a large mixing bowl, mix salt and flour with a large spoon. After 5 minutes, stir yeast mix into flour mix. With well-floured hands, shape dough into 6-inch rods, initials, animals or traditional twisted pretzel shapes. Brush them with the beaten egg and place on a greased cookie sheet. If desired, sprinkle them with extra salt or cinnamon-sugar. Bake for 12 minutes at 425°.

We also have a slide show showing you the different ways to fix a broken wire, poking wire etc. any type of emergency so maybe you won't have to take the time to come in for a visit. Have you heard of Invisalign/Invisalign Teen? They are clear braces!!! Yeah, thats right clear braces! Invisalign treatment will consist of a series of aligners that you switch out about every two weeks. Each aligner is made to shift your teeth into place. They are removable so you can eat, drink, floss, and brush and then place them back in. They should be worn 23 out of 24 hours to have full effect. Invisalign Teen is a new product for teenagers. They have indicators on them that will fade in color if worn full time. That way we know if they are getting worn or not. You also get 2 free aligners incase they get lost. Invisalign aligners are comfortable, effective, customized and clear. It is good for teenagers that are in sports as well. No worring about getting a mouthgaurd to protect mouth from the hard metal braces. Invisalign will straighten your teeth just the same as the metal braces but has so many more advantages.
